Based on our experience in building multiple marketplaces for our clients we found out some of the key considerations you need to keep in mind before starting your own marketplace business.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why marketplaces make for great businesses<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sharing economy, where individuals and small businesses interact directly through online marketplace platforms, is a growing phenomenon. In the UK alone, the sharing economy generated transactions worth \u00a328B in 2015, and that number is expected to rise to \u00a3140B by 2025. Globally, the market is expected to be worth over a trillion.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main reason marketplaces scale so well is that you don\u2019t need to have your own inventory to run one. Airbnb doesn\u2019t own any hotel rooms, and Uber doesn\u2019t own any cars. This means you can build a huge business without taking on a lot of risk.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the biggest challenges in building a successful marketplace?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Convincing people to use your platform takes a lot of work. You need to solve the chicken and egg problem: how to convince others to bring their inventory to your marketplace when there are still no buyers, and how to attract buyers when you don\u2019t have inventory (yet). You also need to change people\u2019s mindsets. Airbnb, for example, had to convince people to stay in strangers\u2019 homes. Marketplaces rarely become overnight successes and require patience to reach critical mass.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Define your marketplace goals<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before launching your marketplace, it\u2019s essential to understand your goals. What do you want to achieve with your platform? Do you want to create a niche marketplace, or do you want to build a broad platform? Are you looking to disrupt an industry or provide a new channel for existing players? The MVP should focus on the core value proposition, allowing you to learn from user feedback and iterate your platform.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engage your users<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of a marketplace business depends on its users. It\u2019s crucial to engage your users to ensure their loyalty and to attract new users to your platform. Providing a great user experience, offering competitive pricing, ensuring trust and safety, and creating a sense of community can all help you engage your users. Encourage user-generated content, reviews, and ratings to build trust and provide valuable information to buyers and sellers.
